Title: Syntropic Food Forest Establishment
Location: Northern NSW, Australia
Other Information: I have been working this rocky soil with a mattock, removing as many rocks as possible in order to grow a variety of staple root vegetables such as sweet potato, taro, arrowroot, yam, etc. I have also planted some nitrogen fixing crops for ‘chopping and dropping’ fast green mulch to build up the organic content in the clay/rock dense soil. Instead of seeing the rocky soil as a problem, I decided to see the rocks as an asset and began using them the create edges and drains for water overflow. I soon plan on using some of these rocks to make a herb spiral. In the syntropic food forest I have also planted bananas, paw paw and ice-cream bean. I have also thrown in some annual crops into the swales such as pumpkin to create a nice ground cover and mung beans/chickpeas to act as nitrogen crops, green manure and food production.
