Double digging is typically done when cultivating soil in a new garden, or when deep top-soil is required. Double digging is definitely some tough work, but well worth it in the end. This type of gardening is great for desert gardening, plants with deep roots, can keep carrots from forking, or great when you dig a garden for the first time.
