Other Information: This is how I turn a patch of wasteful ‘energy intensive’ grass lawn into a thriving annual garden! First I dig up the grass, the grass can be left in the soil for extra organic matter however in this instance I removed the grass and gave it to the chickens as it is easier to work with the soil without the large clumps of grass in it. Next I etched out the rows and pathways, then I went to gather the banana plants for a slow release fertilizer and water retention. Then I slice the banana stems length ways and place them face down in the soil between the rows. Then I sowed some ‘buckwheat’ as a green manure crop and to suppress the weeds. Next I cover the banana stems with the leaves for extra water retention through the dry season then apply a thick layer of hay over the soil mounds NEVER LEAVE YOUR SOIL EXPOSED! Finally I finished with the mulch pathways which will also slowly feed carbon and nutrients into the soil as the mycelium gets to work decomposing and sharing nutrients with the plants. Now we are ready to get planting! So aside from the buckwheat, I also planted Daikon radish around the perimeter as a pest deterrent then I planted brussel sprouts and eggplants spaced out in the rows with a few different varieties of carrot seeds in between. Should make for a decent first harvest from what was once just energy intensive lawn, consuming petrol for the lawn mower and human energy/time for little to no output. In a few months time, we will begin to reap the benefits as there is not only less lawn to mow but an abundance of food and reduced grocery bills.
